Scouting - Game films

Is there a plan to get game film to operate on both MAC and PC platforms?

Some leagues do not distribute every team's playbook to every team in the league for scouting purposes.  It isn't very realistic to essentially send a team over to practice against the opposition for an unlimited number of times and then suit up and play a real game.  If films worked for everyone, that would solve that issue.  Unless there is a way to get a single use playbook, that could be played against a limited number of times before shutting itself down.

My god, man! How much time do you think we have? I, for one, do not get paid enough to watch game films. If I had to scout a team's tendencies only through game film . . . well, I'd find another league.

That said, I'd love to be able to watch the occasional game.

My first playmaker league was the MFL where there was a single scout book for every team in the league and the rest was all films.  With the addition that you get the playbook that you face every week in a playbook exchange.

Some leagues are quite like that now.

Compared to leagues where everyone has all of my PBs I find that I spend significantly less time in preparation for each game, it does become more important to build a well rounded and complete playbook, though.

I'm not in on the no-PB leagues anymore, but I used to be part of the ol MFL... problem I found was the old veterans swapped PB's all the time, and it was the new guy who was out in the cold.  That was a long time ago though.

It would be nice to have game films back.

Maybe it would not be difficult for brian to hook up a function to the password to play a game with a PB so that it will only run 10 times or something?  I think ken might be on to a good idea for his league.

That's an intersting idea.  I'll keep it around.  Is there any interest in that or similar restrictions?

I personally think it will destroy leagues. IMO, most coaches barely have time to compete as it is. One of the ONLY reasons that we're able to participate is that we can set the game to run in the background and compile huge numbers of transcripts to select which plays we want to use. Something that those who clamor for total "realism" have to remember is that in "real" football, it's the coach's only job to prepare his team for their next opponent. This game is not, for the vast majority of us, something to which we're willing to commit huge amounts of time. Why make it harder to retain the coaching base?

I would postulate that your style of preparation is precisely what takes so much time.  Running huge numbers of transcripts and allowing your computer to tell you what plays to run doesn't sound like a lot of fun to me.  When the film doesn't break, I like to watch a game or two from an oppenent's recent games.  If I have played them in the past, I will have some PBs to scrimmage against.  If I have never played them, I can go on word of mouth ideas, or just take the time to actually build a complete playbook.

If I know my opponent also has dozens of my playbooks to scrimmage against before we play, I can guarantee I would want to spend many hours per game prepping for the opposition, and attempting to figure out if there is anything he hasn't seen.  Seems like a huge waste of time to me.  I spend between 2 and 4 hours on prep over two weeks for each opponent in leagues where every PB isn't shared with each opponent.  In laegues where all PBs were shared time was easilly doubled.

there is a great debate going on over at ESPN.com about stat's vs scouting... it's very interesting.

The same issues we are talking about in PMFB.

My prep style takes virtually no time to get a playbook together. Running the transcripts takes no actual time from me, running it through a stat program takes very little time either. All in all, I usually spend less than an hour a week preparing a playbook.

Game film for both platforms would be great.  For one it gives coaches another means to prep.  Just because we have game film doesn't mean someone has to use it.  I will always be for as many different options and utilities as possible.

I have had many potential PMFB coaches tell me that one of their biggest turnoffs is that they cannot watch their own game.  Personally I would love to be able to see my game even after it is run.  I think a workable game film on both platforms would help bring coaches into leagues.
