Getting the most from my Defensive Ends - How To?

I want my defensive ends to mainly follow/attack the running back.  Which is a better strategy:

1) Give them the down arrow command (go for the ball carrier I think that gets assigned to most defensive linemen on the front line)
2) Give them the "R"" command that can be used to penetrate the line (or not) in pursuit of the running back.  This is the similar command as "watch linemen" (or something close).

Sorry the terms I am using are probably not the right ones :-)

But...I am looking to get more from my defenisve ends when it comes to stopping the run, I'll use other players to pressure the quarterback,  so I am open to sugegstions!

You might also try experimenting with giving them m-t-m coverage or using your LBs in m-t-m to cover those running backs.
