Notes for New Coaches

PMFB is pretty damn fun, but it takes work to get good. Work and time.

No one slaps together a few plays, joins a league, and wins. Much more common is that someone slaps together a few plays, joins a league, and gets their butt kicked by 50 - or more - points for a whole season.

That can be really discouraging, but it isn't a reflection of your talent or skill as a coach. It is just a function of time and work. There's a lot that you don't know about this game. There’s a lot to learn.

Many of us have been playing this game for over ten years. We have hundreds of plays in our archives, plays that we've tested in competition and tweaked to make sure the timing is perfect. We know how the AI system in PMFB works and we can make it roll over and do tricks - and we can get it to run a real pretty two-minute drill too. We know which player abilities matter and how much. We know how to sling the smak and laugh about it. We know how to win - and, more importantly, we know how to lose.

The single most important thing that you don't yet know . . . is how to build defenses that work.

Don't worry. You'll learn. You'll learn all of these things and more.

And most PMFB coaches like to teach. If you have a question, ask.

How about some of you "old timers" give us some tips and ideas in this thread.  Specifically how to build a good defensive scheme.  I would be very open to learning from some of the veteran coaches here!

Thanks!

Chris

There is a ton of material in the coahces handbook on PMFB.net, and there is also a lot of material on my tigger site, pmfb.net/tigger/

Those are where I would start, then start hititng up coaches that are active in leagues and proving to put up good defense.
